The professorships are named in honor of Asa Griggs Candler, the founder of the Coca-Cola Company. In 1914 Candler offered $1 million toward the establishment of Emory; he went on to become a long-term member of the Emory Board of Trustees and served as its Chair for over 30 years. The Asa G. Candler professorships were established by presidential initiative during the Laney administration in the 1980s. They are utilized to recruit or retain especially well-qualified senior candidates. The Dean and the Provost must approve the nomination. These professorships are funded from general revenues, not from an endowment.
