Established in 1957, the Charles Howard Candler Professorships honor senior scholars at Emory who have shown outstanding teaching ability and productive scholarship in one or more fields of learning, and additionally who have distinguished themselves in long and substantial service to the University and in furthering the cause of higher education. Charles Howard Candle served as Chair of Emory's Board of Trustees for nearly thirty years, helping bring the university through the Great Depression and a World War. Shortly after his death in 1957, the Board decided at its annual meeting that an appropriate memorial must be established. A special trustees committee was appointed, and in November 1959 the full board established a separate endowment fund, the income of which would be used to provide added honorary stipends for distinguished faculty members. Candler's widow, Flora Glenn Candler, sponsored the endowment. The first CHC Professors were named in a formal ceremony on 30 May 1960.
In 1960 then-President Walter Martin wrote: "Emory believes that good teaching is the first obligation of a university. A memorial recognizing and fostering outstanding scholarship and research among the Emory faculty is a more suitable tribute to a man like Mr. Candler than any physical tribute such as a building...The Charles Howard Candler Professorships will, through the years, attract and hold outstanding teachers for the university and its students."
