The Dobbs Chairs are named after one of the earliest and greatest benefactors of the University. Born on a poor family farm in rural Carroll County soon after the Civil War, Samuel Candler Dobbs 1868-1950)went to work at age 18 as a clerk in the Atlanta wholesale and retail drug company owned by his uncle, Asa Griggs Candler. He became the first traveling salesman and then the first advertising and sales manager for the Coca-Cola company. He served as president of the Coca-Cola Company in 1919-1920 and, after its sale, founded the Dobbs Mortgage Investment Company with offices in Atlanta and New York. His $100,000 gift in 1915 built Emory's first dormitory. In a speech before the Emory faculty in 1938, he pledged $1 million to Emory College, which he characterized as the trunk of the tree of knowledge, with the professional schools being branches or limbs. The provision he made for this tree in his will grew into the Dobbs Trust, dedicated to the support of the College.
The Dobbs professorships, created in 1985, recognize and honor achievements of Emory professors who have shown extraordinary accomplishment and considerable future promise in research and teaching. These professorships were designed "to honor some of the University's best young faculty who have done unusually fine work in both teaching and research early in their careers."The Dobbs professors are appointed from the existing faculty of the college.
