The Robert W. Woodruff Professors

The Emily and Ernest Woodruff Fund, established in 1979, makes possible presidential appointments of Woodruff Chairs. The professorships are named in honor of Robert W. Woodruff (1889-1985), legendary philanthropist and leader of the Coca-Cola Company: "Robert W. Woodruff concentrated his gifts in the areas of health care, education, the arts, conservation of nature, and economic development and civic affairs. These are faculty members who should "not only be teachers/scholars of distinction but also should serve a broad constituency beyond the individual departments and programs and at the same time provide a unifying force to graduate education at Emory." Initially, the awards were aimed at attracting outstanding faculty to Emory; but an external review of the Woodruff Professorships in 1981 urged that outstanding faculty members presently at Emory should not be overlooked in filling the chairs (Lamar Report, 1981).
