As the Emory community enjoys the holiday season, we gather to share the warmth and generosity of spirit this time of year inspires. We may also reflect together on not only who we are, but also what we do, and what we are grateful for.

We can draw inspiration from the words of African American writer and educator Howard Thurman, who said: "Keep fresh before me the moments of my High Resolve, that in fair weather or in foul, in good times or in tempests, in the days when the darkness and the foe are nameless or familiar, I may not forget that to which my life is committed."

In reflecting, we achieve fresh perspective on our high resolve.

Emory is a place high on ambition and good will, a place where people genuinely care about community and hold the greatest of aspirations for our future. Such an environment provides fertile ground to cultivate Emory as one of the leading research universities in the nation.

The fundamental purpose of our university, all universities, is to bring together a community of scholars to broaden knowledge and to enlighten individuals and society through education, research, and scholarship.

At this traditional time of expressing gratitude and sharing hopes for the future, I am grateful to be part of our Emory community of scholars, and I look forward to pursuing together our shared high resolve for Emory in the new year.

I wish you and yours a joyous holiday season and a very fruitful New Year.
