Winship awards are named in honor of Charles T. Winship (1903-1987), Emory alumnus and long-term secretary of the Boart of Trustees. Born in Atlanta, Winship practiced law before becoming president and chair of the board of Fulton Supply. He encouraged and supported the construction of Woodruff Memorial Library, supplying the library with generous annual grants from the Lewis H. Beck Foundation, of which he served as trustee. The Winship Award targets tenured faculty who demonstrate singular accomplishments in research and encourages further scholarly research and research-based teaching. Nine faculty members hold Winship Professorships at any given time. They rotate in a staggered grant cycle with three new members named each year.
