A Callaloo celebration

Writing may be a solitary craft, but an overflow crowd turned out to hear Emory poets Kevin Young and Jericho Brown read from original works during the recent Callaloo Conference. Young and Brown, along with English and Creative Writing department chair Natasha Trethewey, all credit the Callaloo journal with publishing their early works. Emory's creative writing talent and rich literary archives helped draw more than six dozen scholars to campus for the four-day festival of African diaspora culture in October. "Through the arts and creativity, we are creating a bridge to bring people together," Provost Claire Sterk said at the conference opening. Look for videos of the event online. Meantime, fans can enjoy new publications by participating Emory authors, including Young's "Book of Hours" and Brown's "The New Testament."
