The Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) is responsible for guiding and supporting the careers of a diverse and exceptional faculty at Emory across the complete faculty lifecycle: identifying and supporting best practices around ambitious faculty recruitment, maintaining a program for new faculty orientation, managing the processes around promotion and tenure, developing a robust program around faculty retention, and advocating for a culture that supports high-level research and scholarship.
Our team is charged with enhancing faculty success, recognizing faculty excellence, cultivating academic leadership, and defining, managing, and clarifying policies and processes related to faculty rights and responsibilities. Pearl K. Dowe
Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs | Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Political Science and African American Studies
Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Pearl K. Dowe is responsible for overseeing initiatives to enhance faculty development and academic excellence across the university by supporting faculty in their teaching, research and professional growth.
Dowe is the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Political Science and African American Studies with a joint appointment between the university’s Oxford College and Emory College of Arts and Sciences. She is a distinguished scholar and leader whose work intersects the fields of political science, African American studies, and gender studies. Her most recent book, The Radical Imagination of Black Women: Ambition, Politics and Power (2023), has been widely recognized and awarded the Best Book Award from the American Political Science Association’s Race, Ethnicity and Politics section. Dowe is also the author of numerous articles and book chapters, and has been sought out to offer her expertise by media outlets such as the Washington Post, New York Times, Time Magazine and TheGrio.
Dowe is a graduate of Savannah State University and holds an MA in political science from Georgia Southern University and a PhD in political science from Howard University.

Joel Baumgart
Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Success and Recognition
Joel P. Baumgart is the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Success and Recognition. Joel was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar in Tanzania in 2015-16. Before his time abroad, Joel was an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of the Director at the National Institutes of Health and a Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Fellow at the National Academy of Engineering.
In addition to his policy experience, Joel was a professor of anatomy and physiology at the W.E.B. Du Bois Scholars Institute at Princeton University, a New York Academy of Sciences Education Fellow, an Epilepsy Foundation Predoctoral Fellow, a Visiting Scholar at the Université de Montpellier, a visiting associate professor at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences, and a writer at the Core Knowledge Foundation.
Joel is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology and was selected to the inaugural class of the New Voices at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He was the recipient of the Eric W. Lothman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Neuroscience, the Award for Excellence in Scholarship in the Sciences & Engineering and the Early Achievement Alumni Award from the University of Virginia, the Dr. Louis B. Fink Capstone Award from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Zora Neale Hurston Thesis Award for the Social Sciences from Columbia University.
Joel has recently been awarded the MacVittie Emerging Leader Award from the American Association of University Administrators and was inducted into the Bouchet Society at Cornell University in 2012.

Carol Flowers St. John
Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Engagement
Carol Flowers St. John is Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Engagement and plays a key role in helping to shape the faculty experience at Emory. Her current portfolio includes managing the university tenure and promotion review process and decanal appointments; creating and delivering a range of strategic programming to enhance faculty development and engagement; and developing faculty policies, in collaboration with senior leadership, and making recommendations for modifications of administrative procedures.

Eric R. Weeks
Associate Vice Provost, Faculty Affairs | Director, Center for Faculty Development and Excellence | Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Physics
Eric Weeks is the director of the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Physics. As Director, he collaborates with others in the CFDE and at Emory to support the success of faculty throughout the university. Eric came to Emory in January 2001 as an assistant professor in the Department of Physics (Emory College of Arts and Sciences), and served as Chair of that department from 2013-18. His research specialty is "experimental soft condensed matter" which means he studies squishy materials like foam, sand, and paste. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. At Emory he has taught classes ranging from introductory level (300+ students) to small graduate seminars. He won an Emory Crystal Apple teaching award and an Emory College CTC teaching award. Eric has a long-standing commitment to engaging and supporting faculty, students, and postdoctoral scholars in teaching, research and professional development; due to this he received Emory College's 2018 George P. Cuttino Award for Excellence in Mentoring. In addition to his important role as a member of the Emory faculty, Eric created and led the Science Education Research Journal Club, which brings together students and faculty from Emory and other Atlanta universities to analyze and understand research approaches to science education. Eric started as Director of the CFDE in July 2018.
Eric has a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas at Austin (1997), and a B.S. in engineering physics from the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University prior to coming to Emory.

Tiffany Worboy
Assistant Vice Provost of Faculty Success and Recognition
Tiffany Worboy is the Assistant Vice Provost of Faculty Success and Recognition at Emory University, where she fosters faculty advancement by identifying prestigious awards, fellowships, and growth opportunities. With a career at Emory spanning more than two decades, Tiffany has held a range of strategic roles, including managing senior director of corporate and foundation relations, communications specialist for the Office of the University Secretary, and assistant director of the Pre-Health Mentoring Office. Tiffany joined Emory in 1999 as a doctoral student in Women’s Studies, establishing a deep connection to the university and its mission of academic excellence and community impact.

Rebecca Nurse
Senior Director, Programs and Special Events
Rebecca Nurse is the Senior Director, Programs and Special Events and is responsible for managing the strategic planning process for faculty programs and special events, while also serving as the administrative coordinator for the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees. Rebecca has a career background in the field of human resources that spans more than two decades, with roles and experience in various organizations, including serving as Faculty Human Resources Director at the University of South Carolina. Rebecca joined the Emory College of Arts and Sciences dean’s office in 2012 and was promoted to the Office of the Provost in 2014.

Ann E. Rogers
Director of Emeritus College | Professor of Nursing
Dr. Rogers is a Professor, tenured, and nationally renowned sleep expert who joined the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing June 2010. Her distinguished research career spans three decades and has focused on patients with narcolepsy, as well as adult populations who obtain insufficient sleep. She earned a doctorate from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), a masters degree in nursing from the University of Missouri-Columbia (Columbia, MO) and a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Iowa College of Nursing (Iowa City, IA). She was appointed as the Director of Emory University Emeritus College in June 2021.

Tiffany Whitfield
Program Coordinator
Tiffany Whitfield is the Program Coordinator for the Office of Faculty Affairs and is responsible for championing the creation and implementation of faculty programming that align with faculty development. She also plays a key role in the administrative functions of the tenure and promotion process. Tiffany’s professional background has spanned the customer service, hospitality, and property management industries prior to joining Oxford College in 2019 and Emory University in 2024.

Janet Hoyte
Executive Administrative Assistant
Janet Hoyte is the Executive Administrative Assistant for the Office of Faculty Affairs at Emory University. In this role, she is responsible for supporting the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs and managing the daily administrative operations for the department. Janet joined Emory in 2022 and has dedicated her career to leadership administrative support for higher education.
