Request for Proposals: Programming in Arts and Humanistic Inquiry


The Office of the Provost considers proposals to fund creative programming that nurtures scholarship and community-building in the arts and humanistic inquiry at Emory.

Eligibility

  • Full-time Emory University faculty of any rank are eligible to apply
  • Eligible programming initiatives include but are not limited to conferences, symposia, workshops, exhibitions and concerts

Requirements

  • Proposals must be vetted and approved in writing by your dean and, in schools where it is relevant, your department chair (a short email will suffice)
  • All proposals should also be submitted for funding consideration to the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry
  • All proposals from faculty in Emory College of Arts and Sciences (ECAS) that include honoraria or travel expenses for campus guests must also be submitted to the ECAS Hightower Fund

Application

It includes four principal sections:

  • Statement of program concept (2,000 characters)
  • Statement of anticipated impact (2,000 characters)
  • Statement on measurement/assessment of impact on the campus community (2,000 characters)
  • Project Budget
    • The project budget must clearly indicate the total cost of all expenses associated with the project
    • Your budget must clearly indicate the portion of the total project budget to covered by the Arts and Humanistic Inquiry Initiative
    • Your budget must identify the funding sources for all costs not covered by the Arts and Humanistic Inquiry Initiative

Duration and Terms of Funding

  • All awards are made for a single fiscal year and must be spent within that fiscal year. Unspent awards must be returned. Funding is not renewable
  • Multi-year projects may be considered, with an invitation extended to submit a new application for continued funding prior to the start of each new fiscal year
  • Funds may not be used for faculty or staff salary support. Administrative support for projects must be provided within the awardee's home department or program
  • Requests to authorize departures from project proposals and/or the extension of funding must be submitted to Kevin Karnes, chair of the faculty advisory committee and divisional dean of arts in Emory College, by emailing kkarnes@emory.edu. All such requests must be approved prior to the disbursement of funds
  • Support from the Arts and Humanistic Inquiry Initiative of Emory's Office of the Provost must be acknowledged in all publicly facing materials related to your project

Review Process and Criteria

Proposals will be evaluated by the Faculty Advisory Committee of the Arts and Humanistic Inquiry Initiative, which will forward its recommendation to the Office of the Provost.

The committee will make its recommendation based on its evaluation of the following four criteria:

  • Clarity of project description
  • Significance/innovation of the project
  • Impact of the project
  • Clarity and appropriateness of budget

Post-Award Responsibilities

Successful applicants will submit two reports (executive narrative and budget) at the end of the project period.
